A) Logging Footage & EDL

B) Rough cut and review

This is what the footage looks like after cutting and assembling it. There are no effects in sound or visual, however I have ordered it and made appropriate cuts. I will need to add some colour gradients, and sounds necessary to the visual that makes it sync well and professionalize the piece.

For the final edit of the short film, I will add  few effects. For the kitchen scene, when the character is eating the sandwich I will show a woozy effect to show that the character is in another dimension/world. I will add sound effects for when the implant is being used, for example when he opens and closes the fridge and when he eats the sandwich.

C) Reviewing your effects and transitions

In my short film edit, I used two effects. One being a slight glitch effect and another one being the intro title card that i made. In the glitch effect, I showed the characters distorted point of view which is different to normal. I showed this by adding a glitch effect and this helped make the audience understand that the way the character see's things with this implant on is far from normal.

I also used an effect for the intro titled card which was showing key scenes but in a different colour gradient, which was dark blue/green. This lasted for 10-15 seconds, then the credits for the producer, director, cinematographer and sound designer. Alongside the green colour gradient effect, I added a few green screen effects to add to the mysterious music and feel of the short film. I used a pill falling effect, where several pills dropped floated mid air while dropping down, and I also used a rain effect while the character was walking down the stairs.

There were only a few transitions that we used, between a few scenes we would sync up the end of a scene and the beginning of a new scene. For example, we showed the character stumbling down the stairs and then walking to the right, while the camera stays with him and the camera ends on a wall, then the beginning of the following scene showed the camera going in the same direction whilst moving with the character. We did similar transitions with car scenes and making a sandwich. However, in terms of adobe premiere pro transitions I added simple cross-fades dipping to black, as it was relevant to the story-line.

D) Reviewing your audio

Here is what the edit looked like with the footage put together, and audio moved in different places in order for me to know where each sound effect is. This is what the final edit looks like in terms of audio-visual. Some clips were colour corrected differently, for example in my intro title card screen the scenes were green/dark blue to give a sense of mystery that is about to take place. I found that some of the audio needed to be changed, so that was changed.

The music I used for the ending of my short film was a soundtrack that a member of our group played with his guitar. It was inspired by the idea of what Samuel is going through, as the tone of the song is sad, depressing and concerning.

I also used a glitch effect when Samuel touches the implant, this gives him a shock that makes him get visions or flashbacks of himself first signing the contract to be able to use the implant in the first place.

When a scene changes, the audio transition would gradually gain or decrease in sound which made it feel more of a film.

Summary of the audio

The audio was good and worked well in fitting in with the short film, the background music was great as it showed that something was wrong or different as it gave a scuttle hint of uncertainty. But I would either increase the length of the music throughout or add a different track next time, so there wouldn't be silence for big chunks of it. The ending credit music, that a member of our group made was very good and suited the short film idea, narrative and theme. Finally, sound effects of butter going on bread, the knife being thrown in the air and when Samuel touches the implant made it sound much more professional and realistic.
